I wrote this book because I had to, the story it tells wanted to be told. Needed to be told. But I also wrote this novel for you, dear stranger whom I do not know, hoping that reading it would give you joy and speak to your own experience of life, whatever this may be. Of course, no book is for everyone. Some of your fellow readers have found the pace of Nameless River too slow, or its mood too introspective, but most have been thrilled by the ride. People ask: Is Maurice you? The answer, of course, is—as for any novel—no and yes. Events that have happened to me have been used as building blocks for Maurice’s story but they have been altered in the process of polishing them. Facts and fiction are now inseparable. Conversely, elements that are entirely invented can convey feelings and experiences which I know firsthand.

People also ask: Are you working on another project? Yes, I am, and it’s moving along nicely. But, patience, Nameless River took me over ten years. Good writing takes time.
